ARTIST STATEMENT
I create work out of the desire to reflect upon life, both the social and my personal human process.
My work relates to an intimate research of the body and movement with a strong sensibility towards social and political themes. I take inspiration from pedestrian movements and daily actions. I am interested in identity, particularly my identity as a woman and as a contemporary Israeli. In my work search for the interfaces between the political and the personal; how one affects the other.
My work often combines movement, images and text in a form of dance or physical theater, incorporating set material with open movement scores as a way to establish authenticity and presence on stage. I see presence as a performative practice and am interested in how choreography imprints itself on the body.
I create work for theatrical spaces as well as unconventional projects in alternative and outdoor spaces, bringing together my understanding of space as an architect and my physical skills as a dancer and choreographer. I strive to treat each performance space as a unique location, which can challenge the establishment of audience-performer relations – a theme that appears in many of my works in various levels of integration. I aim to question the preconceived roles that are established during the event of a performance.
I love the human body and I am engaged in an ongoing exploration of its abilities and limitations. My works are inspired by performance theory; I am interested in approaching the body as material. I seek to present the individual body, which undergoes a personal and unique process throughout the course of the work. Physical limitation, exhaustion and duration are some of the choreographic themes I have recently explored in my work. In my work, the body is seen sweating, panting, working and human.
I make work for small groups, from solos to quartets and enjoy collaborating with my dancers as well as musicians.
I explore and delve into the personal histories and autobiographical details of the performers I work with and search for the ways in which personal stories can touch upon wider, universal, human subjects.
The representation of the female body is of great interest to me and as such, my past three creations have been made for female performers.
